Building upon its storied history, which includes eleven USA teams, three Olympic teams, a four-game sweep of international powerhouse Cuba, sixteen national championships, and eighteen foreign countries, USA Stadium continues to be the "homeplate" for amateur baseball. The training site for the USA Olympic Team
from 1985-1996, Americas Amateur Baseball Center and Millington have hosted 166
international games at USA Stadium. Twenty-one of those involved world champion Cuba,
while the Japanese National Team has played 19 games here. Other countries who have played
in Millington include Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Canada, China, Italy, Korea, Mexico,
Mongolia, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Peru, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, USSR, and Venezuela. Over 50 of the most elite college coaches have been involved at Millington as well, including Hall of Famers: Skip Bertman, Ron Fraser, Mark Marquess, and Ron Polk. The tradition of excellence continues at USA
Stadium in 2002, as Millington will host both the NJCAA Division II and NABF High School
National Championships once again. International baseball could also return to Millington
with a possible series with China. During the first week in May, the Gulf South Conference will convene in Millington for their Conference Championship which will involve their six top college teams from six southern states. Last season, the GSC had 7 players drafted, 5 All-Americans, and 4 teams finish in the National Top 20 (Delta State - 3, Alabama-Huntsville - 8, Southern Arkansas - 17, and Valdosta State - 20). Babe Howard and the staff of Americas Amateur Baseball Center are committed to continuing the great tradition of championship baseball at USA Stadium. |
