NJCAA Division II World Series takes the field in Millington this weekend

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The National Junior College Division II World Series returns to Millington for the 15th consecutive year this week, with possibly the most wide-open and exciting field in the tournament’s history. Gone are perennial powers Grand Rapids, Iowa Central, Brookdale, and Parkland. Replacing them are eight top teams from all of the country, each with more than 32 wins this season, including three teams with 40-plus victories. For the first time since 2002, the field does not contain a previous tournament champion. Elgin Community College from Elgin, Ill., the only participant from the 2006 championship, will be the slight frontrunner, as they make their fourth straight appearance in Millington. The Spartans look poised for a breakthrough in 2007,

The event begins on Saturday, May 26 at 9:00 a.m. at USA Stadium in Millington. Eight teams from eight different states will compete in the double-elimination tournament, which lasts through next Thursday. The Championship game will be played Thursday night, May 31, at 7:30 p.m. If the team from the loser’s bracket wins, the additional game will be played on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday’s action begins at 9:00 a.m. with the Miles Community College Pioneers (39-16) from Miles City, Montana, against Lakers from Longview Community College (37-17) from Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Miles is making their debut in Millington, after knocking out Iowa Central in the district tournament last weekend. Longview is looking for their first win in Millington, as they went 0-2 in their only other appearance, the first Division II World Series in 1993.

Saturday’s 12:00 game pits the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers (38-15) from Senatobia, Mississippi, against the Cougars of Frederick Community College (32-10) from Frederick, Maryland. The Rangers are back in the World Series for the first time since 1997; they took home second place in their first appearance in the tournament in 1996. Frederick has also finished as runner-up in the event, losing to Parkland in the final in 2002.

At 3:00 p.m., the Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes (42-20) from Scottsdale, Arizona, take on the Tribunes from Monroe Community College (35-11) from Rochester, New York. Both teams are making their World Series debut in Millington.

The 7:30 p.m. game will be the Bruins of Kellogg Community College (40-13) of Battle Creek, Michigan against the Elgin Community College Spartans (45-9) of Elgin, Illinois. Kellogg is making their third appearance with an overall tournament record of 5-4, including a second place finish in 1999. Elgin returns to Millington for a fourth straight year, taking home the third place trophy in 2005.

The tournament will continue Sunday through Thursday, May 31, with four games on Sunday as well.

The welcoming banquet for the tournament will be Friday, May 25, at Crosspointe Baptist in Millington. Representatives of the media are invited to attend the barbeque dinner that starts at 7:00 p.m. Steve Ehrhart, executive director of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, will be the featured speaker.

Admission: $7.00 per day or $18.00 for a tournament pass for adults and $5.00 per day or $10.00 for a tournament pass for children (12 and under)
