LSU-Eunice shuts out Grand Rapids to claim in NJCAA Division II World Series Championship

MILLINGTON, TN – Brett Durand tossed a complete-game, two-hit, shutout to lead Louisiana State University at Eunice (52-11) to a 3-0 win over three-time defending champion Grand Rapids in the national championship game of the NJCAA Division II World Series Friday at USA Stadium. Durand (10-2) allowed only two infield hits and a walk while striking out nine. GRCC had gone 33 straight games in Millington without being shutout, dating back to their first game ever in the World Series in 1993.

Left fielder Matt Collins was the offensive hero of the night, driving in the first two runs for LSUE on a triple and single, respectively. He also made a spectacular diving catch in the outfield to keep the Raiders at bay. Matt Berard had two hits for the Bengals as well.

Ben Knuth (8-4) took the loss for the Raiders, as
Grand Rapids finished the season 40-21.  

The national title is the first for LSU-Eunice; their previous best finish was third in their debut appearance in the tournament in 2004.

LSU-Eunice’s big inning propels them over Grand Rapids, into winner-take-all championship game in NJCAA Division II World Series

MILLINGTON, TN – Louisiana State University at Eunice (51-11) was able to accomplish Thursday night what no team in 17 straight games has been able to at USA Stadium – a defeat of Grand Rapids, the three-time defending national champion. LSUE’s 7-3 win over GRCC (40-20) forces a decisive winner-take-all championship game on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Bengals plated six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the team recorded a double, two triples, and a homer in the frame.

Bryan Jaeger went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Rickey Noland blasted his fourth homer of the year. Matt Berard also had two hits for the Bengals. Seven different players recorded one hit each for
Grand Rapids .

Corey Chapman kept the Raider bats at bay most of the evening. He allowed seven hits and three runs in six and one-third innings of work, striking out nine. Thomas Tillery tossed two and two-thirds hitless innings to earn his fourth save of the season. Andre Benjamin (8-2) took the loss for the Raiders, tossing four plus innings.

LSU-Eunice earns championship berth, rematch with Grand Rapids in NJCAA Division II World Series  

MILLINGTON , TN Louisiana State University at Eunice (50-11) broke open a 3-3 game with two runs in the top of the sixth and an insurance run in the ninth to eliminate Brookdale Community College (N.J.) 6-3 in the NJCAA World Series Wednesday. With the win, the Bengals advance to their first national championship game – a rematch with Grand Rapids Community College ( Mich. ). The Raiders defeated LSUE 11-6 Tuesday night in the winner’s bracket final.

Brandon Richey led the offense for LSU-Eunice going 3-for-3 with a homer, two runs, and RBI, reaching base in all five plate appearances. Matt Berard, Leonard Porche, and Paige Hodges each drove in a run for LSUE.

Carlos Guzman had three of Brookdale’s five hits, including a double and a home run.

Nate Duhe (13-1) tossed a complete game for Eunice, scattering five hits and allowing only two earned runs. Ramon Guzman (2-2) took the loss for the Jersey Blues (43-10)

The championship game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night. If LSU-Eunice defeats Grand Rapids , the if necessary game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Grand Rapids advances to NJCAA Division II World Series championship game with 11-6 win over LSU-Eunice

MILLINGTON, TN Grand Rapids Community College (40-19) showed the poise of a veteran team, not panicking when they fell behind 6-2 early, and rebounded to defeat LSU-Eunice 11-6 in the winner’s bracket final of NJCAA Division II World Series. GRCC will be playing for their fourth consecutive title, as they advanced to the title game for the fourth consecutive year – a feat that has never been accomplished before in the Division II World Series.  

The Raiders looked as tough as ever, as they strung together nine unanswered runs and silenced the hot bats of LSUE. Sean O’Rourke (6-2) picked up the win in relief for GRCC, allowing three runs in five and one-third innings. When O’Rourke got in trouble, Eric Lawrence claim in and slammed the door on LSU-Eunice, allowing only two hits over the final three and two-thirds innings. He picked up his thirteenth save of the season.

Sam Palace , Charlie Dunneback, and Brian Baker led GRCC with two hits each, and seven different Raiders knocked in a run. Kyle Suire led the charge for LSU going 3-for-4 with two triples and three RBI, while Matt Berard blasted his sixth homer of the season. Josh Pomier also had three hits, including a double.

LSU-Eunice will now play Brookdale Wednesday night at
7:30 p.m. , with the winner of that game advancing to take on Grand Rapids in the championship on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. If the loser’s bracket team defeats GRCC, the additional game will be played Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Brookdale holds off ACM, earns semifinal berth in NJCAA Division II World Series

MILLINGTON, TN – After giving up two runs in the top of the first, Brookdale Community College (43-9) scored seven unanswered runs and held off a fierce comeback attempt by Allegany College of Maryland to claim a 7-6 victory in an NJCAA Division II World Series elimination game Tuesday. The Jersey Blues will take on the loser of Grand Rapids and LSU-Eunice in the semifinal Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Joseph Schiettino paced BCC with three hits, while Paddy Matera drove in three. Ryan Flynn had two hits for ACM.

Ryan Beard (12-1) picked up the win in relief in four and two-thirds innings of work after starter Nicholas Riker had to be pulled because of a hand injury. Beard was handed his first loss of the season on Sunday, but bounced back to throw four good innings before the ninth inning rally. Shane Weldon (10-3) took the loss for Allegany College of Maryland.

The Trojans finish the season with a record of 49-11, while Brookdale advanced to their first semifinal since 1993. BCC finished third that year, as they were eliminated in that game by
Potomac State .

Allegany College of Maryland builds big lead, eliminates Elgin in NJCAA Division II World Series

MILLINGTON, TN – Allegany College of Maryland (49-10) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and were never threatened as they claimed a 10-3 elimination game win over Elgin (47-16) Monday night in the NJCAA Division II World Series. ACM starter Chris Smith shut out the Spartans through six innings and allowed his batters to go to work. Allegany scored two in the first, three in the third, and two in the fourth to distance themselves from Elgin.

Scott Hugney led the way for ACM, going 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, a triple, and a home run. He fell only a double short of hitting for the cycle. Corey Dolly and Arek Zambanini each had three hits as well for ACM. Doug Sanders, Jordan Tokarz, and Cody Marshall had two hits each for
Elgin, but ECC could not overcome the 13 men that they left on base.

Smith (9-2) picked up the win for Allegany College of Maryland, while Kyle Kobernus got the loss in four innings of work.

ACM advances to a rematch with Brookdale at
3:00 p.m. Tuesday. BCC defeated them 8-0 in the opening round.

Brookdale knocks out
St. Louis Forest Park 8-6 in NJCAA Division II World Series

MILLINGTON , TN Brookdale Community College (42-9) broke a 6-6 tie with a single run in the eighth and ninth to claim an 8-6 win over St. Louis-Forest Park in an elimination game in the NJCAA Division II World Series Monday. Brookdale led 4-0 after two innings but found themselves trailing 5-4 after six innings. The Jersey Blues then scored two in the top of the seventh, and the Highlanders answered with one in the bottom of the inning before Brookdale claimed the win.

Carlos Guzman led the hitting for BCC with two hits, including a home run and three RBI. Paddy Matera had three hits for the Jersey Blues, while Damian Walcott also went deep. Steve Porter and Ryan Gray each had three hits for St. Louis , while Blake Bussmann and Brad Johnson each homered for the Highlanders.

Jonathan Guzman (2-0) picked up the win in one and a third innings or relief. William Lawson shut the door in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season. Matt Kerperien (3-2) took the loss. He threw to two batters, both of which scored.

Brookdale advances to take on the winner of
Elgin and Allegany Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. St. Louis Forest Park finishes the season 36-20.

Grand Rapids downs Brookdale 10-5 to advance to winner’s bracket final in NJCAA Division II World Series

MILLINGTON, TN – Grand Rapids Community College, the three-time defending World Series champion, used timely hitting to score nine unanswered runs and knock off Brookdale Community College (41-8) Sunday in the NJCAA Division II World Series. The Raiders trailed 2-0 after two innings, but pitcher Ben Knuth silenced the BCC bats over the next four innings, allowing his team to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Brookdale rallied in the ninth but only managed two runs.

Five GRCC batters had multiple hits led by Brian Baker with a run and three RBI. Destan Makonnen connected for his sixth home run of the season, while Drew Slagte
r also knocked in three. Joseph Schiettino had three hits for Brookdale.

Knuth (7-3), the reigning tournament MVP, had a shaky start but settled to toss seven innings allowing only three runs while striking out seven. Ryan Beard took the loss for the Jersey Blues in four innings of work.

Grand Rapids advances to the winner’s bracket final to take on LSU-Eunice on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Brookdale will play St. Louis Forest Park at 3:00 p.m. Monday.

LSU-Eunice capitalizes on Elgin miscues to claim 5-1 victory in NJCAA Division II World Series

MILLINGTON, TN – An intentional walk, hit batter, failed pickoff, and wild pitch proved to be the difference in the game as LSU-Eunice (49-10) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim a 5-1 win over Elgin Community College (47-15) Sunday in the NJCAA Division II World Series. Bengals starter Brett Durand silenced the Elgin bats, as he scattered five hits and allowed only one unearned run in eight innings.

Dustin Guidry had two hits for LSUE, while Bryan Jaeger and Kyle Suire each had an RBI. Paul Griffin recorded two hits for
Elgin .

Durand improved to 9-2 on the season, and Matt Broussard came in to shut the door on
Elgin in the ninth. Ryan Pollard tossed a complete game in the losing effort.

LSU-Eunice advances to play the winner of
Grand Rapids and Brookdale at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, while Elgin will face Allegany at 7:30 p.m. Monday in an elimination game.

Allegany College of Maryland holds off Iowa Central 4-3 in elimination game in NJCAA Division II World Series

MILLINGTON , TN – Matthew Smith led Allegany College of Maryland (48-10) to an elimination game victory over Iowa Central Community College 4-3 Sunday. Smith tossed a complete game and scattered six hits while striking out five. The sophomore hurler improved his record to 13-1 on the season.

ACM led 4-0 through four and a half innings before Iowa Central closed the gap to
4-2 after six . ICCC threatened in the bottom of the ninth but only managed one in the inning.

Kelly Frantz led the way for the Trojans with two hits and two RBI, while Jim Collins, Scott Hugney, and M.J. Parsons also recorded two hits for the team. Mike Davis and Brian Strawn has two hits each for Iowa Central.

Kris Ruepke (10-2) took the loss for the Tritons in six and one-third innings of work.

Allegany College of Maryland advances to take on the loser of LSU-Eunice and
Elgin tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. Iowa Central finished the season with a record of 43-18.

St. Louis – Forest Park rallies in ninth, eliminates #1 Mesa  in NJCAA Division II World Series

MILLINGTON, TN – St. Louis Community College – Forest Park (36-19) rallied for seven runs in the top of the ninth to knock out Mesa Community College (46-19) 13-8 in the NJCAA Division II World Series Sunday. MCC came into the game as the #1 ranked team in the nation in the final NJCAA poll but were the first team eliminated from the tournament.

The Highlanders from St. Louis jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first, before trailing 5-2 through two innings. They scrapped back to tie the score at 5-5 through four innings. Mesa picked up three in the bottom of the seventh; Forest Park then scored eight unanswered runs to end the game.

Matt Schwartz went 3-for-5 for SLCC-FP with a solo home run and another RBI. Ryan Gray also recorded three hits for St. Louis . Every batter in the Mesa line-up had a hit, led by Sean Kenney’s 3-for-5 performance.

Steven Mohr (4-1) picked up the win in relief for the Highlanders, while A. J. Montano took the loss for Mesa in five and two-thirds innings of work.

St. Louis Forest Park advances to take on the loser of tonight’s game between Grand Rapids and Brookdale at 3:00 p.m. on Monday.

Brookdale trounces Allegany College of Maryland 8-0 Saturday in NJCAA Division II World Series

MILLINGTON, TN – Brookdale Community College (41-8) looked like the tournament veterans they are, as the jumped out to an early led and never let up, defeating tournament rookie Allegany College of Maryland (47-10) in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II World Series Saturday. The Jersey Blues plated two in the first and five the second en route to the eight inning run-rule shortened win.

Joseph Schiettino had two hits and three RBI for BCC, while Pedro Nieves recorded three hits. Carlos Guzman, Joseph Arminio, Jordan Marsch, and Damian Walcott also had multiple hits in the game. Scott Hugney notched two hits for ACM.

William Lawson (7-1) had a superb night on the mound in his shutout performance. He scattered five hits while striking out three and walking none. Eric Donahue (10-3) tossed one and a third and took the loss for ACM.

Brookdale advances to take on
Grand Rapids on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Allegany College of Maryland will play Iowa Central in an elimination game at noon
Sunday.

Grand Rapids blanks Iowa Central 8-0 Saturday in NJCAA Division II World Series opening day

MILLINGTON, TN – Grand Rapids Community College (38-19) took the first step toward repeating as champions for a fourth straight time as they defeated Iowa Central 8-0 in a run-rule shortened seven inning game in the NJCAA Division II World Series Saturday. The Raiders plated two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth before exploding for five runs in the seventh to end the game.

Destan Makonnen led the way for GRCC going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Mike Lepor and Brian Baker each recorded two hits for the Raiders. Heath Stein picked up the only hit of the game for Iowa Central (43-17).

Andre Benjamin dominated the Triton batters, striking out nine and allowing only one hit over seven innings. Tim Flattery (8-5) took the loss for Iowa Central.

Grand Rapids advances to take on the winner of Brookdale and Allegany at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Iowa Central will play the loser of that game at noon Sunday.

LSU-Eunice pounds St. Louis - Forest Park 17-0 Saturday in NJCAA Division II World Series first round

MILLINGTON, TN – Louisiana State University at Eunice (48-10) scored early and often as they pummeled St. Louis – Forest Park (35-19) 17-0 in a run-rule shortened five inning game in the NJCAA Division II World Series Saturday. Every batter in the starting line-up for the Bengals had a hit and scored in the win.

Leonard Porche and Dustin Guidry led the way with two hits and three RBI each. Guidry hit his 5th homer of the season in the fourth inning. Brandon Richey, Kyle Suire, Josh Pomier, and Rickey Noland also had two hits for LSUE.

Nate Duhe (12-1) was nearly unhittable for the Bengals going four innings to pick up the win. Ronnie Martin (10-3) took the loss for
St. Louis .

LSU-Eunice advances to take on Elgin at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. St. Louis Forest Park will play Mesa at 9:00 a.m. in an elimination game.

Elgin downs Mesa 6-4 in 10 innings in opening game of NJCAA Division II World Series
MILLINGTON, TN – Elgin Community College (47-14) plated two runs in the top of the first, but their bats went silent until Paul Griffin’s three-run triple in the top of the tenth sealed the victory for the Spartans. Elgin went on to score one more and held off a rally in the bottom of the inning en route to a 6-4 opening game victory over Mesa Community College (46-17).

ECC got three consecutive hits in the top of the first to plate two runs and maintained a 2-0 lead until the sixth, when Mesa’s Michael Levi plated Charlie Calamia on a two-run double. The Thunderbirds added an unearned run in the eighth to send the game to extra innings.

Dave Carbonell led the way with three hits for
Elgin , while Cody Marshall, Chris Schultz, and Nate Peterson each had two. Calamia and Levi each had two hits for Mesa .

Dan Vogt picked up the win for the Spartans, allowing three runs in thee innings, while Ryan Pollard picked up the save. Matt Van Den Heuvel tossed nine and one-third innings and took the lost for the Thunderbirds.

Elgin advances to play the winner of St. Louis-Forest Park and LSU-Eunice at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Mesa will play the loser at 9:00 a.m. Sunday.

Grand Rapids looks for four-peat as World Series kicks off in Millington

Grand Rapids Community College from Grand Rapids, Michigan, returns to USA Stadium to try for the first-ever four-peat in the NJCAA Division Two Baseball World Series. Last year, GRCC became the first team to win three in a row. In all, they have claimed five World Series titles in the seven trips to Millington. The tournament field could be the toughest ever as seven of the eight teams were ranked in the top ten in the final NJCAA poll.

The event begins on Saturday, May 27 at 9:00 a.m. at USA Stadium in Millington. Millington, which has hosted the tournament since its inception in 1993, will host the World Series for the 13th consecutive year. Eight teams from eight different states will compete in the double-elimination tournament, which lasts through next Thursday. The Championship game will be played Thursday night, June 1, at 7:30 p.m. If the team from the loser's bracket wins, the additional game will be played on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday's action begins at 9:00 a.m. with the #1-ranked Mesa Community College Thunderbirds (46-17) from Mesa, Arizona, against #8-ranked Spartans from Elgin Community College (46-14) from Elgin, Illinois. This is the third consecutive trip to the World Series for both schools. Elgin finished third last year, while Mesa has only one victory in their two appearances.

Saturday's 12:00 game pits the #19-ranked St. Louis Community College - Forest Park Highlanders (35-18) from St. Louis, Missouri, against the #4-ranked Bengals of Louisiana State University at Eunice (44-10). The Highlanders are making their third appearance in Millington, but first since 2001. They have not tasted victory in a World Series game. LSU-Eunice is making their second appearance, after a third place finish in 2004.

At 3:00 p.m., the #9-ranked three-time defending champion Grand Rapids Community College Raiders (37-18) from Grand Rapids, Michigan, take on the #7-ranked Tritons from Iowa Central Community College (43-16) from Fort Dodge, Iowa. Grand Rapids is seeking their fourth straight NJCAA Division II World Series championship and sixth overall. GRCC has defeated Iowa Central twice in the championship game of this event. Iowa Central has three runner-up finishes in seven trips to Millington.

The 7:30 p.m. game will be the #5-ranked Jersey Blues of Brookdale Community College (40-8) of Lincroft, New Jersey against the #6 ranked Allegany College of Maryland (47-9) of Cumberland. Brookdale is making their fifth appearance with an overall tournament record of 4-8. The Trojans of Allegany are making their tournament debut.

The tournament will continue Sunday through Thursday, June 1, with four games on Sunday as well.

Admission: $7.00 per day or $18.00 for a tournament pass for adults and $5.00 per day or $10.00 for a tournament pass for children (12 and under)
