Grand Rapids blanks Parkland 2-0, earns third consecutive NJCAA Division II Baseball Championship

MILLINGTON , TENN. Grand Rapids Community College (35-21) made NJCAA history on Thursday night as they became the first team in Division II Baseball history to win three consecutive national championships. GRCC defeated Parkland College , who was the last team other than Grand Rapids to win the championship. The Raiders finished a perfect 4-0 in the tournament for the second consecutive year.  

Grand Rapids finally lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, as they received an RBI single from Justin McKenzie. The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the eighth when Mike Lepor scored on a failed pickoff attempt at third base, bringing the final score to 2-0.

Tournament MVP Ben Knuth (7-3) was the first pitcher all week to shut down the Cobras offense. He allowed only three hits and one walk in eight innings. Knuth fanned four. Eric Lawrence pitched the ninth to earn his ninth save of the year. Adam Tobler (10-2) took the loss for Parkland . The shut-out win was only the second in the championship game in 13 years. Lincoln Land won 12-0 in 2000.

Parkland
advances to NJCAA Division II World Series championship game; Elgin finishes third

MILLINGTON , TENN. – Parkland College (52-16) punched their ticket into the championship game of the NJCAA Division II World Series on Wednesday night by defeating Elgin Community College (54-10) 4-2. The Cobras will now take on Grand Rapids Community College , who is looking for their third straight title. Parkland won the title in 2002.

The Cobras got on the board early as Lance Tofflemire tripled in two runs in the top of the first. Elgin scored a run in the bottom of the third cutting the lead in half, but Parkland answered quickly as Tristan Facer launched his seventh homer of the year into the lights in left field, giving PC a 3-1 lead. Tofflemire added a sac fly in the top of the seventh to give
Parkland a 4-1 cushion. The Spartans plated a run in the ninth with no hits bringing the final score to 4-2.

Shawn McElyea (6-1) silenced the
Elgin bats allowing only three hits and one earned run over seven innings. Tristan Facer closed out the game, earning his second save. Robert Johnson (9-1) took the loss for Elgin .

Parkland will now take on Grand Rapids Thursday night at 7:30 p.m in the championship game. If Parkland wins Thursday night’s game, the extra game would be played at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Grand Rapids downs Elgin in winners' bracket final in NJCAA II World Series

MILLINGTON , TENN. – Grand Rapids Community College (34-21) took a huge step Tuesday night toward winning their third consecutive NJCAA Division II World Series, as they defeated Elgin Community College (54-9) 6-2 in the winners' bracket final at USA Stadium. The Raiders got all the runs they would need in the first two innings and cruised to the four run victory.

Drew Slagter led the way offensively for GRCC going 3-for-4 with two doubles, while Justin McKenzie recorded two hits and drove in two.

Cale Ort and Eric Lawrence combined on the four-hitter for the Raiders. Ort (5-2) tossed six innings of three-hit baseball and allowed two runs.
Lawrence threw three innings, allowing one hit and picking up his eighth save of the season. Dan Vogt (8-1) took the loss for Elgin .

Elgin will now take on Parkland Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. for the right to take on Grand Rapids in the championship on Thursday night. If the winner of Wednesday night’s game also wins Thursday, the extra game would be played at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Parkland
overwhelms Copiah-Lincoln 10-0 in elimination game in NJCAA II World Series

MILLINGTON , TENN. Parkland College (51-16) scored early and often as they closed out Copiah-Lincoln Community College (32-28-1) 10-0 in six innings in an elimination game Tuesday afternoon in the NJCAA Division II World Series. Parkland advances to the semi-finals tomorrow at 7:30 to take on the loser of Elgin and Grand Rapids .

Five Cobras recorded multiple hits in the game, led by Lance Tofflemire and Scott Hauber with three hits each. Tofflemire scored three times and homered. Hauber drove in two and scored a run.

Jim Viscomi stole three bases for the second consecutive game and broke the tournament record with 8 thus far in the tournament. Nook Logan , currently of the Detroit Tigers, held the previous record with 7.

Dan Collar (9-3) was equally impressive for Parkland . He tossed six innings and allowed only three hits in the win. Lance Deville (4-5) took the loss for Copiah-Lincoln.

Copiah-Lincoln outslugs, eliminates Chesapeake 16-15 in NJCAA II World Series

MILLINGTON , TENN. Copiah Lincoln Community College jumped out to a 9-0 lead through three and one-half innings and held off a late-inning rally by Chesapeake College (40-18) to down the Skipjacks 16-15 in an elimination game in the NJCAA Division II World Series Monday night at USA Stadium. The 31 combined runs was a new World Series record, as were the 26 combined RBI. The previous records of 28 runs and 24 RBI were set in 1997 in the championship game between  Grand Rapids and Iowa Central.

Two individual records were tied by Wolfpack players: Jody Britt had 6 RBI in the game equaling the total of Mike Zangori in 1996, and Patrick Williams scored four runs tying 10 other players.

Williams finished the game 4-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Britt was 3-for-6, while Ben Sandifer went 3-for-5. Justin Armiger recorded four hits for the Skipjacks, while Brett Ireland had three.

Will Buckels (3-2) earned the win in relief for Co-Lin, going five innings and allowing seven runs. Lance Deville picked up his first save of the season. Matt Fitzgerald (6-1) took the loss for Chesapeake as the Skipjacks never got closer than one run.

Copiah-Lincoln (32-27-1) advances to take on
Parkland College at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Hauber’s cycle leads Parkland to 10-3 elimination victory over Mesa in NJCAA II World Series


MILLINGTON
, TENN. – Scott Hauber went 4-for-6 with four RBI and hit for the cycle as Parkland College (50-16) routed Mesa Community College (43-23) in an elimination game in the NJCAA Division II World Series Monday afternoon at USA Stadium. The Cobras pounded out 17 hits in the game.

Hauber recorded a single in the fourth, triple in the fifth, and double in the sixth and capped off the afternoon with an eighth-inning home run. Jim Viscomi, Lance Tofflemire, and Jeremy Peden each recorded three hits for the Cobras.
Mesa had had four players with multiple hits.

Tyler Brandon delivered a solid performance on the mound picking up the win for Parkland . He allowed three runs in six and one-third innings. John Cahill took the loss for Mesa .  

Parkland advances to take on the winner of Copiah-Lincoln and Chesapeake Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

Bielski propels Elgin past Parkland in NJCAA World Series

MILLINGTON , TENN. – Sophomore outfielder Chris Bielski drove in four Spartan runs, and starter Mike Hlavacek (9-0) shut down the potent Parkland College offense for a 6-2 Elgin win in the NJCAA Division II World Series Sunday night at USA Stadium. The win pushes Elgin (54-8) into the winner’s bracket final for the first time in school history where they will meet two-time defending champion Grand Rapids on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Elgin took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Ryan Wardlow scored on a Scott Sieder sacrifice fly. Bielski then drove in his first run of the game with a double down the left field line.

Parkland evened the contest in the bottom of the fifth as they notched three consecutive singles followed by a sacrifice fly to score two runs.

The Spartans wasted no time regaining the lead as  Sieder drove in his second run on a ground out to third, and Bielski followed up with a double to left center. for a 4-2 lead through five and a half innings. Bielski added a ninth-inning two run homer to give Elgin the 6-2 win.

Hlavacek tossed a complete game, striking out six, and allowed only two runs. D. J. Throneburg (3-3) took the loss for Parkland (49-16).

Parker, Greening pitch Grand Rapids past Chesapeake, 6-1

MILLINGTON , TENN. – Sophomore Matt Parker and freshman Jason Greening combined to allow Chesapeake College only five hits and led Grand Rapids Community College into the winners’ bracket final with a 6-1 win at the NJCAA II World Series.

Grand Rapids (33-21), one of only two unranked teams in the Series, will meet the winner of Elgin and Parkland , Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Chesapeake (40-17) meets Copiah-Lincoln in the losers’ bracket, Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Parker (8-3) allowed only one unearned run in 7.0 innings of work, striking out eight and yielding only four hits. Greening gave up only one hit in the final two innings.

Drew Slagter led the Grand Rapids’ offense, going 3-for-5, including an RBI triple in the Raiders’ five-run seventh inning.

Chesapeake starter Nick Lemmer (5-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) over 6.1 innings. James Carroll was the only Skipjack with two hits.

Williams' clouts lift Co-Lin over #2 Brookdale, 5-3

MILLINGTON , TENN. – Sophomore Patrick Williams hit two go-ahead home runs, the second being the game-winner, as Copiah-Lincoln Community College eliminated Brookdale Community College, 5-3 in 10 innings on Sunday at the NJCAA II World Series.

Williams became the sixth player in World Series history with two home runs in a game. The first, a solo shot to left field, gave Co-Lin a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Brookdale (42-6) answered with a run in the sixth to knot the game at three each.

Williams’ second blast came with Josh Logan on second base and sailed just inside the left-field foul pole off Brookdale reliever Matt Coulson (9-1). Williams finished 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

Ryan Belanger (7-8), who pitched a complete game on Saturday in Copiah-Lincoln’s 3-1 loss to Elgin , came back to pitch the final 1.1 innings to earn the win. All four outs Belanger recorded were strikeouts.  

Copiah-Lincoln (31-27-1) advanced in the losers’ bracket to meet the loser of the Grand Rapids-Chesapeake game, Monday at 7:30 p.m. Brookdale, ranked No. 2 in the final NJCAA II regular season poll, dropped to 4-8 all-time in World Series play.

#6 Mesa holds on to eliminate #13 Madison Area Tech, 8-6  

MILLINGTON , TENN. – Mesa Community College built an eight-run lead after five innings and held on to defeat Madison Area Technical College, 8-6, in a losers’ bracket game Sunday at the 2005 NJCAA II World Series. The loss eliminated Madison Area Tech, who lost to Chesapeake 11-1 on Saturday.

The win for Mesa (43-22) was its first in two trips to the World Series. The Thunderbirds meet the loser of the Elgin-Parkland game, Monday at 3 p.m.

Paul Schmidt (11-6) earned the win for Mesa on the mound. The sophomore lefty allowed only one earned run and six hits in 7.0 innings, striking out six.

Madison Area Tech (43-21) made its comeback after Schmidt left, battering Mesa reliever Tom Johnson for four runs in the eighth inning and cutting the lead to two runs. Brian Broderick relieved Johnson after only five batters and pitched one scoreless inning. Andre Fernandez got the last two outs for the save.

Danny Pleas (5-6) yielded all eight runs for Madison Area Tech. He lasted five innings, giving up eight hits and striking out two.

First baseman Troy Vesling went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in for Madison Area Tech. Nate Burnham and Charlie Calamia both had three RBI for Mesa . Calamia hit his first home run of the season.

#8 Parkland notches 17 hits in 14-6 win over #2 Brookdale

MILLINGTON , TENN. Parkland College freshman Jim Viscomi went 4-for-5 with a double and his 11th home run to lead the 8th-ranked Cobras to a 14-6 win over No. 2 Brookdale Community College in their opening game at the 2005 NJCAA II World Series. The game was called after eight innings due to the tournament’s 8-run rule.

Parkland (48-15), in its fourth appearance at the Series and first since 2003, jumped out early with five runs in the bottom of the first. The Cobras knocked out Brookdale starter Adam Ortiz (6-1) after only one-third of an inning. The previously unbeaten Ortiz allowed three hits, three walks, and five earned runs.

Brookdale (42-5), back in the Series for the first time since 2002, had nine hits, led by sophomore David Lorber who went 3-for-5 with three RBI.

After allowing two first inning runs, Parkland starter Adam Tobler (10-1) settled in and gave the Cobras six solid innings. He yielded six hits and four earned runs. Shawn McElyea pitched the final two innings.

Parkland collected 17 hits in the game with six different player notching multi-hits. Scott Hauber went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs.

Parkland advances to meet Elgin Community College in the winners’ bracket, Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Brookdale’s losers’ bracket game is Sunday at noon against Copiah-Lincoln Community College .

Johnson pitches #3 Elgin past Copiah-Lincoln


MILLINGTON , TENN. – Elgin Community College’s Robert Johnson allowed only four hits and one unearned run in pitching the Spartans past Copiah-Lincoln Community College, 3-1, on Saturday in the first round of the NJCAA II World Series.

The sophomore right-hander from Lake in the Hills, Ill. , did not walk a batter, struck out two, and remained perfect at 9-0 on the season. Johnson limited Copiah-Lincoln to only one hit in nine at-bats with runners on base.

Elgin (53-8), ranked #3 in the final NJCAA II regular season poll, took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Ryan Wardlow walked to lead off the inning and later scored on Scott Sieder’s sacrifice fly. One batter later, Chris Bielski singled in Matt Jackson.

Copiah-Lincoln (30-27-1), making its first national tournament appearance since 2000, received solid starting pitching from sophomore Ryan Belanger (6-8). The University of Southern Mississippi signee, allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) while walking only one and striking out nine.

Copiah-Lincoln cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth. Jody Britt reached on an error and later scored on Matthew Schnexnader’s single. Elgin scored its final run on Nick Tepper’s RBI single in the fifth.

Johnson then retired 11 straight Copiah-Lincoln hitters before Xavier Qualls singled to lead off the ninth. Qualls, attempting to stretch the hit into a double, was thrown out by Elgin rightfielder Matt Jackson at second base.

Elgin will meet the winner of Parkland College and Brookdale Community College , Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Copiah-Lincoln takes on the loser of that game, Sunday at noon .

Grand Rapids grabs extra-inning win over Mesa

MILLINGTON , TENN. Grand Rapids Community College scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and added three more 10th-inning runs to defeat Mesa Community College , 6-4, Saturday in the first round of the 2005 NJCAA II World Series.

Grand Rapids (32-21), Series winners each of the last two years, improved to 22-5 all-time in the national tournament.

Mesa (42-22), making its second straight appearance, lost its third consecutive tournament game.

With the score tied at 2-2, Grand Rapids ’ Mike Lepor scored from third on a wild pitch by Mesa reliever Andre Fernandez (4-2). An error by Mesa shortstop Charlie Calamia allowed another run to score before Fernandez walked a pair of batters with the bases loaded, forcing in two more runs.

Mesa answered in the bottom of the 10th with a two-run homer by Spud Low, his second blast of the game. He also hit a solo shot in the sixth.

Grand Rapids reliever Eric Lawrence (3-2) collected the win despite giving up the game-tying single to Michael Levi in the bottom of the ninth inning. He allowed four hits and three earned runs in 2.2 innings, matching the total number of earned runs he had allowed in 35 innings this season.

Grand Rapids , who had seven hits by seven different hitters, meets Chesapeake College in the second round, Sunday at 3 p.m. Mesa drops to the losers’ bracket and takes on Madison Area Technical College in an elimination game, Sunday at 9 a.m.

Chesapeake run-rules Madison Area Tech in NJCAA World Series opener

MILLINGTON , TENN. Chesapeake College and Madison Area Technical College were both making their debuts at the NJCAA Division II World Series on Saturday at USA Stadium. However, Chesapeake (40-16) played like old veterans, pounding out 12 hits and defeating Madison Area Tech 11-1 in the series’ opening game. The game ended after only six innings due to the tournament’s mercy rule.

Chesapeake , the Northeast District Champions and 14th-ranked team in NJCAA II, received a 4-for-4 performance from freshman third baseman Justin Armiger. The Bradywine, Md., native laced his team-high fifth triple and drove in four runs. Freshman rightfielder James Carroll went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs, and two driven in.

Sophomore Bryan Brainer (8-2) pitched a complete game for the Skipjacks on the mound. He allowed only four hits and one earned run while striking out five.

Madison Area Tech (43-20), the Northwest District Champions and 13th-ranked team, committed two errors that led to five unearned runs. Wolfpack starter Brett Scarpetta (6-4) lasted only 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and eight runs (three earned).

Chesapeake advances to meet the winner of Mesa and Grand Rapids , Sunday at 3 p.m. Madison Area Tech meets the loser of that game, Sunday at 9 a.m.

NJCAA Division II World Series returns to Millington

MILLINGTON, TN - The National Junior College Division Two World Series begins on Saturday, May 28 at 9:00 a.m. at USA Stadium in Millington. Millington, which has hosted the tournament since its inception in 1993, will host the World Series for the 13th consecutive year. Eight teams from seven different states will compete in the double-elimination tournament, which lasts through next Thursday. The Championship game will be played Thursday night, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. If the team from the loser’s bracket wins, the additional game will be played on Friday at 7:30 p.m.  

Saturday’s action begins at 9:00 a.m. with the Madison Area Technical College WolfPack (43-19) from Madison, Wisc., against Skipjacks from Chesapeake College (39-16) from Wye Mills, Md. This is the first appearance in the Division II World Series for both teams.

Saturday’s 12:00 game pits the two-time defending national champion, the Grand Rapids Raiders (30-21) from Grand Rapids, Mich., against the Thunderbirds of Mesa Community College from Mesa, Ariz. Grand Rapids is looking to become the first three-peat champion in NJCAA Division II baseball history. The Raiders won back-to-back titles in 1996 and 1997, but did not qualify for the 1998 tournament. Mesa made its first appearance in the tournament in 2004 but lost their first two games.

At 3:00 p.m., the Elgin Community College Spartans (52-8) from Elgin, Ill., take on the Wolfpack from Copiah-Lincoln Community College (30-26) from Wesson, Miss. Elgin is making their second consecutive tournament appearance, going 1-2 in 2004. Copiah-Lincoln also is making their second appearance, finishing fourth in 2000.

The 7:30 p.m. game will be the Cobras of Parkland College (48-15) of Champaign, Ill. against the Brookdale Community College Jersey Blues (42-4) of Lincroft, N. J. Parkland is making their fourth appearance. The Cobras took home the championship in 2002. Brookdale also is making their fourth appearance. The Jersey Blues have a 4-6 record in the World Series with their best finish being 3rd in 1993.

The tournament will continue Sunday through Thursday, June 2, with four games on Sunday as well.

The welcoming banquet for the tournament will be Friday, May 28, at Crosspointe Baptist in Millington. Representatives of the media are invited to attend the barbeque dinner that starts at 7:00 p.m. Daron Schoenrock from the University of Memphis will be the featured speaker.

Admission: $7.00 per day or $18.00 for a tournament pass for adults and $5.00 per day or $10.00 for a tournament pass for children (12 and under)
