L. B. Wallace tops LSU-Eunice 7-6 in 12 innings; advances to finals in NJCAA Division II World Series

It took twelve innings, but L. B. Wallace hung tough and pulled out a 7-6 victory over LSU-Eunice in a back-and-forth elimination game in the NJCAA Division II World Series Thursday night at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn. The win propels the Saints into the championship game at 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon against Grand Rapids ( Mich. ) Community College. LBW would have to beat the Raiders twice to claim the national championship. If they win the first game, the “if necessary” game will follow immediately.

LSU-Eunice jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, but the Saints battled back to tie it at 1-1 after two innings. The Bengals pushed another run across in the top of the third, but LBW answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. LSUE tied it in the top of the fourth, and it remained that way until the top of the seventh.

The Bengals plated single runs in the seventh and eighth and took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth. A dropped fly ball and wild pitch led to three Saint runs to give them a 6-5 lead after eight.

With their backs to the wall, Eunice came up with a bases loaded walk in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 6-6. However, they had two runners thrown out at home and didn’t score again.

L. B. Wallace finally broke open the tie in the bottom of the twelfth as Jordan Mills single to right with one out. Matthew Miller grounded into a fielder’s choice, but LSUE’s shortstop David Broussard was unable to complete the out. The next batter Ben Woods singled to center scoring Mills for the winning run.

Woods, Mark Wall, and Bryan Mosley each had two hits for LBW, while Broussard reached on 6-of-7 plate appearances, including two hits. Matt Casbon and Ryan Reed each had three hits for LSUE.
