Parkland tops Frederick 6-3 to win NJCAA Division II National Championship

Millington, Tenn. - Parkland (55-9) scored six runs in the first three innings to jump ahead of Frederick (36-9) and never looked back as they claimed the Division II National Championship with a 6-3 win. The Cobras became the first team in the 10-year history of the tournament to win the championship from the loser’s bracket. After winning their first two games, Parkland fell to Frederick 9-8 before knocking off NOC-Enid and Frederick twice to claim the championship.

Mike Stitz (6-1) was picked up the win for the Cobras, allowing only three runs with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Casey Hammond came on to pick up his 11th save of the season. Chris Merchant (6-1) took the loss for Frederick.

Dan Davy led Parkland with three hits, while Bo Gum, Mike Coles, and Dan Grant each had two. Ethan Lare, Daryl Turner, and Corie O’Bryan each recorded a pair of hits for the Cougars.

Parkland stops Frederick 7-3, forces extra game
Millington, Tenn. - Parkland (54-9) scored four runs in the fourth to bust open a 2-1 game and go on for a 7-3 win over Frederick (36-8) in the NJCAA Division II World Series. The Parkland win gives both teams a loss in the tournament and moves the championship game to Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Dave Smith (10-2) picked up his second win of the tournament giving up just three runs in 8 1/3 innings. Willie McLane (3-4) took the loss for Frederick.

Dan Grant drove in three runs for Parkland, while Dan Davy and Mark Colleran had two hits apiece. Ethan Lare belted out two hits for Frederick.

These same two teams will play again Friday night to determine the NJCAA Division II National Champion.

Parkland eliminates NOC-Enid, advances to championship
Millington, Tenn. - Parkland (53-9) scored five unanswered runs over the final six innings to knock off Northern Oklahoma-Enid (43-23) 11-6 in an elimination game Wednesday night in the NJCAA Division II World Series at USA Stadium. After a rocky start, Parkland starter Derek Drage (12-1) settled down to shut down the Jets offense over the final six innings. Bryan McKissack (7-4) took the loss for Enid.

Dan Grant and Brent Heaberlin powered the offense for Parkland with three hits each, while Greg Porter and Brenan Herrera notched three hits a piece for the Jets.

Parkland advances to the championship to take on Frederick at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. If Parkland wins, the if necessary game will be 7:30 p.m. Friday. NOC-Enid finished third.

Frederick gets past Parkland 9-8, advances to finals
Millington, Tenn. - Frederick (36-7) scored seven of their nine runs with two outs and rallied from a 6-2 deficit against Parkland (52-9) to advance to the championship of the NJCAA Division II World Series Wednesday. The two teams combined for 28 hits but stranded 25 runners on base in the contest.

Nate Miller (3-1) picked up the win in relief for Frederick allowing two runs in four innings. Mike Tomaszewski (6-3) took the loss for Parkland.

Mark Campbell and Corie O’Bryan led the offensive attack for the Cougars with three hits each, while Brent Myers drove in three runs. Ben Lee went 4-for-5 for Parkland.

Frederick advances to the championship to take on the winner of Parkland CC/Northern Oklahoma-Enid at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Parkland and NOC-Enid play at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

NOC-Enid drops Iowa Central 6-3 in two-day long game
Millington, Tenn. - Darrin Nance (6-0) tossed a complete game five-hitter over two days to propel the Northern Oklahoma- Enid Jets into the final three teams of the NJCAA Division II World Series with a 6-3 win over Iowa Central in an elimination game Wednesday. Nance tossed five innings Tuesday before the rains came and bounced back to throw four scoreless inning to remain perfect on the season.

NOC-Enid jumped out to a a 3-1 lead after two innings before Iowa Central came back to tie it in the fourth. Just before the rains came on Tuesday, Brent Wadley singled to right field scoring two runs and giving NOC-Enid a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish.

The Jets plated one more run Wednesday in the bottom of the seventh on a Michael Garner single that scored Sean Cawood. Brett Iverson (3-2) took the loss for the Tritons.

Northern Oklahoma-Enid advances to take on the loser of Parkland CC/Frederick CC at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

Iowa Central thrashes, eliminates Pearl River
Millington, Tenn. - Iowa Central (43-18) belted out twelve hits and thirteen runs in four innings and knocked out Pearl River (42-13) 13-3 in a run-rule shortened game in the NJCAA Division II World Series.

Four Tritons recorded two hits in the game, led by Dan Stuart who went 2-for-3 with five RBI on an inside-the-park grand slam in the third inning.

Justin Meyer (7-2) picked up the win for the Tritons, while Jeff Middleton (7-2) took the loss for Pearl River.

Brent Wadley (4-1) picked up the win in relief for NOC-Enid. He also had a solid day at the plate going 3-for-4. Brenan Herrera also had three hits with two RBI for the Jets.

Iowa Central advances to take on Northern Oklahoma - Enid Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

NOC-Enid overcomes seven errors, four unearned runs for come-from-behind win
Millington, Tenn. - NOC-Enid (42-22) rallied for six runs in the sixth and seventh innings to defeat Kellogg CC (30-20) 10-7 in an elimination game Monday at USA Stadium.  The Jets pitching staff shut down Kellogg over the final five innings, after allowing seven runs through the first four.  

Kellogg grabbed an early 5-0 lead through two and half innings on four unearned runs, but NOC-Enid fought back to score four in the bottom of the third.
Kellogg added two more in the fourth before Enid stormed back for six in the sixth and seventh to go up 10-7.

Brent Wadley (4-1) picked up the win in relief for NOC-Enid. He also had a solid day at the plate going 3-for-4. Brenan Herrera also had three hits with two RBI for the Jets.

NOC-Enid advances to play the winner of Pearl River/Iowa Central Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

Parkland fights off feisty NOC-Enid for 8-7 win
Millington, Tenn.
- Parkland (52-8) scored seven runs in the middle three innings and stopped two Northern Oklahoma - Enid (41-22) comeback attempts for a 8-7 win in the NJCAA Division II World Series at USA Stadium Sunday. The Cobras plated three runs in each of the fourth and sixth and one in the fifth to distance themselves with a 7-1 lead. However, NOC-Enid rebounded for five runs in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 7-6.

Parkland added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth that proved to be the winning run, as Sean Cawood led off the top of the ninth with a homer to cut the lead to 8-7. However, Casey Hammond shut the door on NOC-Enid to pick up his tenth save of the season.

Dave Smith (9-2) picked up the win for Parkland, while Brian McKissack (7-3) took the loss for NOC-Enid.

Parkland advances to play Frederick at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. NOC-Enid will play Kellogg at 3:00 p.m. Monday.

Frederick downs Iowa Central 8-5 in winner’s bracket game
Millington, Tenn.
- Frederick (35-7) rallied from three runs down after a half inning to run off eight of the last ten runs of the game and defeated Iowa Central 8-5 in the NJCAA Division II World Series at USA Stadium Saturday. The Cougars scored four in the bottom of the first, which included the first homer of the tournament - off the bat of Bryan Harrington.

Frederick added a single run in the fourth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh for the 8-5 final score. Iowa Central (42-18) scored a single run in the sixth and ninth.

Jimmy Strayhorne (8-1) picked up the win in eight innings for Frederick, while Andrew Schrader (8-3) took the loss for Iowa Central.

Frederick advances to play the winner of Parkland/Northern Oklahoma - Enid at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Iowa Central will play Pearl River at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Pearl River routs Brookdale 9-1 in elimination game
Millington, Tenn.
- Pearl River (42-12) scored early and often as they knocked off Brookdale (35-15) 9-1 in an elimination game at USA Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats plated multiple runs in the second, fourth and sixth en route to a run-rule shortened seven-inning win.

Chris Thompson (11-3) went the distance for PRCC allowing only three hits and one run while striking out ten in seven innings. Thomas Polito (4-3) took the loss for Brookdale.

Pearl River’s first four batters combined for an 8-for-15 afternoon, led by clean-up hitter Jeff Middleton’s 3-for-4. Each of the nine players in the lineup for the Wildcats scored a run.

Pearl River advances to play the loser of Frederick/Iowa Central at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Kellogg rallies from three down, eliminates Jefferson State
Millington, Tenn. - The Kellogg Bruins (30-19) plated six runs in the fourth and fifth innings and held off a late-inning rally by Jefferson State (36-24) to claim a 6-5 victory in an elimination game Sunday at USA Stadium. Brock Snyder (6-4) went the distance in the win for Kellogg. He scattered eleven hits and did not walk a batter. Craig Lybarger (6-2) took the loss for Jefferson State.

Jeff State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and one in the fourth. Kellogg answered by plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth on three RBI doubles by Beau Hamblin, Mike Lozier, and Ethan Willams. Justin Carter singled in two runs in the fifth to give Kellogg a 6-3 lead.

The Pioneers added two runs in the seventh but were unable to complete the job and lost 6-5. Kellogg advances to play the loser of Parkland/Northern Oklahoma-Enid at 3:00 p.m. Monday.

Northern Oklahoma - Enid holds off Pearl River for 3-2 win

Millington, Tenn.
- Northern Oklahoma - Enid (41-21) led 3-0 through seven and a half innings and held off a Pearl River (41-12) rally to win their opening round game in the NJCAA Division II World Series Saturday at USA Stadium.

NOC-Enid starter J. T. Severe (10-2) pitched a complete game allowing only two runs on nine hits while striking out three. Jered Salazar (9-6) took the loss for Pearl River.

Enid scored one unearned run in the second before adding two insurance runs in the eighth. They proved to be important as PRCC added a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings for the final 3-2 margin.

Northern Oklahoma - Enid advances to play Parkland at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Pearl River will play Brookdale at 12:00 p.m. Sunday.

Parkland survives Brookdale; Two rain delays
Millington, Tenn.
- Parkland (51-8) scored four early runs and fended off Brookdale and two hour-long rain delays for a 4-3 victory in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II World Series Saturday at USA Stadium. The Cobras plated two in the first and two in the fourth to gain the lead they would never relinquish.

Parkland starter Derek Drage (11-1) went seven innings scattering eight hits and allowing only one earned run while striking out five. Steve Ziroli pitched the final two innings giving up only one hit to earn his third save. Alex Perez (10-3) took the loss for Brookdale (35-14).

The Cobras plated two in the first, one on a fielder’s choice RBI by Ryan Marker and one on an error by Brookdale second baseman Michael Pierre.

Parkland struck again in the fifth with two runs on RBI hits by Brent Heaberlin and Marker to go up 4-0.

Brookdale scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth to bring the lead to 4-1. An hour and nine minute rain delay took place in the bottom of the sixth. The Jersey Blues added two more in the bottom of the seventh before the rain struck again for an hour and sixteen minutes. However, Ziroli closed the door on Brookdale in the ninth for the 4-3 Parkland win.

Parkland advances to play the winner of Northern Oklahoma-Enid/Pearl River at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Brookdale will play the loser of Northern Oklahoma-Enid/Pearl River at 12:00 p.m. Sunday.

Iowa Central leads wire-to-wire for 5-1 win
Millington, Tenn.
- Andrew Hansen (5-0) allowed only four hits and one unearned run in a complete game as Iowa Central (42-17) defeated Kellogg (29-19) in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II World Series at USA Stadium Saturday. Mitch Fowler (9-2) took the loss for Kellogg.

Iowa Central started the scoring with two runs in the second as Ron Bethke and Justin Meyer recorded back-to-back RBI hits. The Tritons ran the score to 3-0 when Joe Anthonsen scored on Pete Wiedewitsch’s RBI single.

Kellogg scored their lone run on a groundout to first base after a two-base throwing error by Iowa Central catcher Heath Woods. ICCC added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Iowa Central advances to play Frederick at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Kellogg will play Jefferson State at 9:00 a.m. Sunday.

Frederick knocks off Jefferson State in pitching duel
Millington, Tenn.
- Kevin Reaver’s fourth-inning two-run single proved to be all that Frederick starter John Ernst needed for a 2-1 win over Jefferson State (36-23) in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II World Series at USA Stadium Saturday.

Ernst (9-0) went the distance for Frederick (34-7) allowing only four hits and one earned run, while striking out five. Alan Johnson (5-4) took the loss for the Patriots.

Jefferson State took a 1-0 lead in the second on Michael Sizemore’s RBI single that scored Brandon Donahoo. Reaver then put Frederick up to stay with his two-run single.

Frederick advances to play the winner of Iowa Central/Kellogg at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Jefferson State will play the loser of Iowa Central/Kellogg at 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
