May 27,2000 #2 Iowa Central Blanks #24 Copiah-Lincoln in NJCAA II World Series opener MILLINGTON, TN Iowa Central CC sophomore right-hander Troy Gilroy ran his record to a perfect 13-0, striking out nine in the Tritons 4-0 win over Copiah-Lincoln CC in the first game of the NJCAA Division II World Series on Saturday. It was Gilroys eighth complete game on the year and his second shutout. With the game scoreless through four innings, Iowa Central (51-8) plated their first run in the top of the 5th inning. Catcher Raul DeLa Cruz led off the inning with a groundball to Copiah-Lincoln shortstop Nook Logan. Logan bobbled the ball, then threw high to first allowing DeLa Cruz to reach second. Expecting a bunt, the Wolfpack had the third baseman charging and the shortstop covering third base when Iowa Central designated hitter Brian McGuire slapped a double through the vacancy left at shortstop, scoring courtesy runner Steven McGrady. Iowa Central tacked on three insurance runs, two unearned, in the eighth of Wolfpack starter Jacob Blakeney (11-3). First baseman Matt Stender led off the inning with a double to right field. Two batters later, he scored on short stop Jon Beckers single to right. Right fielder Brian Hopkins then reached second on a dropped fly ball by Wolfpack right fielder Scott Poole with Becker moving to third. Becker then scored on a DeLa Cruz groundout, and Becker scored on a wild pitch. Poole was the only Copiah-Lincoln hitter with two hits, including his fourth double of the season leading off the eighth. Four different Iowa Central hitters notched two hits in the Tritons 12-hit attack. Iowa Central advances to the second round, playing Sunday at 3 p.m. against the winner of Jefferson Davis CC and Mercer County CC. Copiah-Lincoln falls to the losers bracket and will face the loser of the above mentioned game at 9 a.m. Sunday morning. Tournament Games To Be
Played on Schedule Despite Rain MILLINGTON, TN - The National Junior College Division Two
World Series begins on Saturday, May 27th at 9:00 a.m. at USA Stadium in Millington.
Millington, which has hosted the tournament since its inception in 1993, will host the
World Series for the 8th consecutive year. Eight teams from eight different states will
compete in the double-elimination tournament, which lasts through next Thursday. The
Championship game will be played Thursday night, June 1st, at 7:30 p.m. If the team from
the losers bracket wins, the additional game will be played on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Once known as Millington's Legion Field, USA Stadium has established itself as one of the unique sports facilities in the country. It was originally built as a home for local American Legion players who might attract a college scout and a scholarship. In 1986 this goal changed as the Stadium became the home for the USA Baseball. From 1986 - 1996, Babe Howard's Stadium played host to the selection and training of the United State finest Amateur Baseball Team. The Olympic Team in 1988 went to Seoul, Korea and wont the Gold Medal. The 1992 Olympic Team finished fourth in Barcelona, and the 1996 Team won the Bronze in Atlanta. In all over 140 major leaguers trained and played in Millington. Twelve National Championships have been decided at USA Stadium including Junior College, American Legion and AAU. Over 50 major college coaches have coached in Millington including LSU's Skip Bertman, Miami's Ron Fraser, and Mississippi State's Ron Polk. Foreign teams have competed with the USA forty-four times in Millington, including the famous Cuban National Team six times.
