Summit Christian captures inaugural FCA Christian Schools National Invitational championship

MILLINGTON , TENN. - Summit Christian School of West Palm Beach, Florida, became the first-ever champion of the FCA Christian Schools National Invitational on Monday at USA Stadium. The Saints knocked off Christian Brothers High School of Memphis 13-9 to claim the title. James Nurmi of SCS was selected as the tournament's most valuable player.

Summit jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the final and held on pick up the victory. Earlier in the day, in the semifinal the Saints had been pushed to the limit as they trailed Evangelical Christian 6-4 going into the bottom of the seventh. Summit rallied for two runs and won the game 7-6 in nine innings.

Plans for the 2006 tournament are already underway. The dates have not been set but will most likely be toward the end of June.

USA Stadium hosts first-ever Fellowship of Christian Athletes Christian Schools National Invitational Tournament

MILLINGTON, TENN. - Eight Christian high schools from around the United States begin play on Friday in the first-ever FCA National Invitational. The tournament is designed solely for Christian schools to promote baseball in a Christian environment and to benefit the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The eight teams participating in the event include: Summit Christian (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Aucilla Christian (Monticello, Fla.), Worthington Christian (Worthington, Ohio), Trinity Christian (Jackson, Tenn.), Christian Brothers (Memphis, Tenn.), Evangelical Christian (Cordova, Tenn.), Briarcrest Christian (Eads, Tenn.), and St. Benedict (Cordova, Tenn.)

The teams convened on Thursday night for a free welcoming barbecue meal and fellowship. Brother Ray Newcomb, from 1st Baptist Church in Millington, welcomed the teams to the city, and Keith Madison, former head coach at the University of Kentucky and current head of college baseball for the FCA, gave an inspirational talk to the teams.

Pool play begins Friday morning at 10:00 am and will conclude on Saturday afternoon. The quarterfinals will be held on Sunday afternoon, with the semi-finals and final on Monday. Games are being played at USA Stadium, Briarcrest, and St. Benedict.
